Do I need to make sure there is something on the underside of the fabric where the print is...like a piece of newspaper or something so the ink doesn't heat set to the other side of the shirt? Does this even make sense?

Hi Monica, check out my article here:

http://www.screen-printing-t-shirts.com/screen-printing-exposure-time-for-photo-emulsion-coated-screens.html

This will explain how to determine exposure time. Besides exposure time, you want to make sure you screen is evenly coated. Depending on how thick the coating is, the exposure time will change. I recommend using a scoop coater.

http://www.screen-printing-t-shirts.com/preparing-the-screen

Let me know how this comes out.

Hallo, not sure if you are still out there but I need some help. I am trying to screen print again after doing it for fun 24 yrs ago. I bought new emulsion, poly fabric & 250 w floodbulb BBA. Did several trials & the suggested 12" above w/ lamp for 15 mins. Only a small little section came out. my transpariencies are very dark & new. The part of the screen that did not wash out look still a brown yellow, so not sure if underexposed or cooked brown??? No one in this town no anything about screening printing. called Speedball, they said raise lamp to 15" for 15 mins. still no help. I've tryed a sample timing beginning from 4 mins to 15 mins, still parts sporically on the whole screen don't wash out. I don't know what else to troubleshot. Appreciate any comments or help, Monica

After you go through the stapling process then hammering the staples in, I finish it off by brushing the edges with rubber cement or some time of glue that really adheres the mesh to the boards.

Great question!
No, it doesn't need to be completely dark. But you don't want to do it under bright sunlight either. The emulsion exposure time is very slow. But the more UV in the light, the faster it will be exposed. Sunlight has lots of UV and can expose the emulsion very quickly. So I normally coat my screens in the evening under normal room lighting, then put the screens away into a dark place to dry.

When laying the emlusion onto the screen, does it have to be completely dark? i know that when after the emlusion is embedded into the screen and evenly spresd, i then place it into a completely dark room or area.
